Frequently asked questions

Families & Case Managers

What makes Snake River Community Supported Living different from traditional care agencies?

Traditional care models often rely on strict rules and default refusals to manage safety. At Snake River, we operate on the "Power of Yes." We believe every individual has a right to true autonomy and self-determination. Instead of creating restrictions, our staff does the hard work to make our participants' choices, goals, and desires happen safely.

If you don't make strict rules, how do participants stay safe?

We use natural consequences as our guide. Rather than saying "no," we coach participants through the real-world results of their actions. For example, if a participant wants to stay up late, we map out how that might make them tired for their favorite activity the next day. This respectful approach teaches long-term independence rather than temporary compliance.

Services

What kind of services do you provide?

We offer comprehensive Residential Habilitation (Res Hab) support. This includes teaching daily life skills (budgeting, cooking, house maintenance), supporting health and wellness, coordinating community inclusion activities, and building self-advocacy skills.

Who do you serve?

We support adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities in Idaho Falls and surrounding communities in Bonneville County, Idaho.

Supported Living

What is supported living?

Supported living is an adult disability service that helps people with developmental disabilities live in their own home and community, with trained staff who teach daily living skills and provide support. In Idaho, supported living is delivered through Residential Habilitation (Res Hab). A typical day might start with making breakfast together, then running errands or heading to work, an afternoon outing in the community, and an evening at home cooking dinner and relaxing with roommates. Sometimes a person doesn't yet have a place to live — we can look for openings in our homes where they'd be a good fit. Often, Snake River rents a home that adults with special needs share as roommates, with our staff working in the home to provide support.

Is Snake River Community Supported Living a DDA?

No. Snake River is certified by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare as a Residential Habilitation Agency, not a Developmental Disabilities Agency (DDA). DDAs typically provide developmental therapy, while Res Hab agencies like Snake River provide in-home and community supported living. Many adults receive both types of services.
